Super Bowl Sunday will see one of the very best entertainment productions this season.
Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, DreamWorks and Lionsgate together will put on their West Side Story reimagining. The updated Hollywood version of the beloved Broadway classic takes place in modern times, tackling violent gang warfare in the American South, where these two gangs find each other amid social unrest.
Some of today’s biggest stars will star in this version of the classic—several players are new to the stage. Many of them were described as “star-making performances” for some of the actors.
Tony-winning actress Cynthia Erivo is all too familiar with firsts: she was the first black actress to win a Tony in a lead role, for The Color Purple. Earlier this year, she starred in Eleanor And Park, a movie inspired by the true story of the young black lesbians who married against the status quo.
And the two youngest additions to the cast are especially promising.
The Drama Desk award-winning Gideon Glick stars as Bernardo Hernandez and Taylor Louderman plays Anita. Glick has appeared in E.R., Mr. Robot, and the films Captain Fantastic and Carol. Louderman has been seen in movies like Disaster Artist, Midnight Special, and I, Tonya.
Aspiring young actresses Selena Martinez and Rachele Brooke Smith have also joined the cast. Both stars made their theater debuts with shows at the famed American Shakespeare Theater in New York City.
West Side Story is being directed by playwright and Tony-winning screenwriter Douglas Carter Beane (The Nance, The Little Dog Laughed). The show’s stars include Corey Stoll, Katrina Lenk, and Michelle Williams.
West Side Story will premiere on NBC’s live musical event, Super Bowl Sunday at 6:00 p.m. EST.
